December 2025 updates

Just a couple updates for this pre-holiday December season:

  • The 2024-2025 sports season will soon be the most represented on the site. I’ve recently uploaded that year for the NHL (Simple Seasons Hockey) and NBA (SS Basketball), while the NLL (SS Lacrosse) is in progress. Those will join the already-available 2025 WNBA (SSBk), 2025 PLL (SSL), and 2024-2025 NBA (One-Pager Pro Basketball).
  • I’m beginning to branch out into fictional leagues! You’ll notice the 2024-2025 Can-Am Box Lacrosse League season (Final Edition) as well as the current 2025-2026 team ratings are uploaded to Simple Seasons Lacrosse. I hope to have more about this soon!
  • And I’ve been playing around with a baseball sim (yet again). Developments are positive, so stay tuned for that.

Branching out with Simple Seasons Hockey

I’m pretty excited about the two SSH seasons I’ve uploaded today: the 1925-1926 season in pro hockey, and the 2024-2025 season in US college hockey.

The former I didn’t know was going to be so interesting when I started it out. But as I learned more about 1926 in pro hockey, the more I realized I had to do more research. That year was the last time a team from outside the NHL competed for the Stanley Cup; at the time, the Cup was awarded to the winner of a series between the NHL champion and the Western Hockey League (formerly Western Canada Hockey League) champion. Afterwards, the WHL would disband, and the Cup was from then on awarded to the winner of the NHL’s playoffs.

And the latter has been a long time coming. When I started creating Simple Season games, I thought maybe one day I could do a college basketball card set, even if it was 300+ schools. But recently, I started thinking about college hockey in the context of SSH, and here we are. Last season, there were 64 schools in Division I men’s hockey, which is much more manageable and was surprisingly quick to produce. With any luck, I might have time to also create women’s Division I as well. Stay tuned!

The One-Pager universe expands

After a good deal of experimenting, I think I’ve finally worked out a basketball version of One-Pager. As with the original soccer version, I was trying to make a game that could fit on one printed page yet deliver a little more complexity than a Simple Seasons score generator. And thanks to pace stats and per-100-possession numbers, I think I’ve got what I was looking for.

One-Pager Pro Basketball breaks a quarter down into 7 parts (so slightly under 2 minutes each) and determines how much scoring is done by each team in those parts. (I had intended to break it down into 2-minute parts–about 4 possessions for each team–but I couldn’t quite get the scoring to work out. Turns out 7 parts worked much better!) That might sound a little dry, but it’s actually quite engaging, especially when you have a tie game going into the last section (from my testing: Washington 103, Sacramento 101).

Right now, I have the last two NBA seasons uploaded, but I hope to get more up soon. This game might end up skewing towards modern seasons due to stats availability, but I’ll do what I can.

Adding a new sport to the roster

I’m happy to announce that I’ve added a new sport for an old game–lacrosse! Simple Seasons Lacrosse now has one season posted, and I’m hoping to have more to come pretty soon.

This is actually version 2 of SSL, as this version is a quarter-by-quarter take on the game, whereas the first incarnation was more like the other sports in that it generated a final score. Unfortunately, with that version, there were far too many shutouts, which understandably isn’t exactly common in box lacrosse. But after redoing the game and playing a couple test matchups, I think it’s ready to be released!

The more granular stats of quarter scores (as opposed to final scores) are a little more difficult to find, so if you know of any good resources for older seasons, please get in touch. Otherwise, I’ll post what I can and when I can–enjoy!

A new fall look

Welcome back to Short Season Games! The site is undergoing some changes this fall; gone is a somewhat jumbled gallery of games, and in its place, I’ve created something a bit more cohesive and organized. It’s much easier to find what you’re looking for and to see all of your options in one place, and that’s exactly the kind of refresh this place needed.

I’ve also taken this opportunity to put up new seasons and new games, so go check those out!

I’ll continue to tinker with the look of things, so the next time you visit, the colors or layout may be different. But overall, I think things are moving in the right direction with this site.
